#nomorematildas - The importance of Visibility of women in science.

A few weeks ago, we created a campaign in order to increase visibility of women in science: #Nomorematildas. The objective of this campaign is to bring to textbooks women scientists who have contributed key findings to the Society.

Why? To raise awareness for the scientific vocation of all those girls who think science is a man’s thing.

The campaign and the video are good. For many days we saw how this video appeared on Social Networks, especially Linkedin.

What I want to talk about today is an element that emerges in this campaign. In my opinion, is key in the fight for equality: visibility.

Visibility and Marketing.

In Marketing, visibility tied to a key concept: notoriety. What we want to achieve with a Marketing campaign is awareness. The target audience takes us into account when buying.

So can you imagine what happens to everything that “is not noticeable” or “Visible”? Exactly, it seems that it does not exist. Visibility in the professional world allows us to develop business, projects or improve our personal brand among many other things.

It is true that from the outset all people have the same opportunities to generate visibility. The reality is different: women have less visibility in the business world. Because it happens? The topic would give us to create a blog in itself. There are many reports that point to prejudice or the fact that women assume family responsibilities as the main causes.

This lack of visibility has consequences in the business world. They point out in the #nomorematildas campaign, it has costs that we should not bear as a society.

The snake biting its own tail, the Matilda effect and prejudice 

In the #Nomorematildas campaign they denounce that by not talking about female referents in scientific fields. There are fewer women in these fields and therefore fewer opportunities generated. A prejudice is also generate, that women are not scientists. Therefore many girls discard that when they are very young.

So why is this going to be any different in the corporate world? Because there is less visibility of women in science it creates fewer opportunities. For them and even creates an unfair prejudice that women have less potential in the business world.

And so, with everything that has to do with prejudice.

You may think that this does not suit you, but the truth is that everyone has prejudices. In this way you will be able to discover people and potentials that your prejudices would not let you discover.
